Do you remember that one time your sweet, darling kitten, Moxie, licked the floor as you were mopping? Did it make you afraid that sweet Mox might get sick or die?? Fast forward a couple of years, and now sweet, darling Moxie has a baby sister. A human one. Wait, you know what I mean! You are now the proud parent of a human child. Are you sure that the cleaning products you are using are safe for your family; babies, kittens and all? If not, I urge you to try a different way of cleaning your home. Try going without the toxic chemicals for a while. I'll bet you won't miss them at all, not as long as you've got the Thieves cleaner I'm getting ready to share with you!

So, What is Thieves? Simply put, it's an essential oil blend from Young Living which includes clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary. This essential oil blend is approved for ingestion by the FDA, and may be taken as a dietary supplement to help support your immune system. It can also be applied topically or diffused. Funnily enough, according to the company,
Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend is based on the legend of 14th century thieves who used clove, rosemary, and other aromatics to protect themselves while robbing plague victims.
Isn't that fascinating?! And kind of ridiculous! Imagine if those thieves hadn't been so resourceful or knowledgeable...It could have been a different story altogether, or no story at all!

Thieves cleaner is super easy to make. It only requires a couple of ingredients and a spray bottle (and these fun, FREE, downloadable labels for you to put on your spray bottle!)

Thieves Cleaner Recipe:

Ingredients:
Thieves Essential Oil (Need oils? Learn more HERE.)
Distilled Water
Castille Soap-I like this one from Dr. Bronner's.

Add 1 Drop Thieves Essential Oil per ounce of distilled water to your spray bottle (For Example, 16 ounces of distilled water = 16 drops thieves essential oil.)
Add 1-2 Ounces castille soap (optional) I like the additional foaminess this added, but it isn't necessary.

Personally, I like to add the castille soap first, then add the oil, then add the water and shake. There is no right or wrong, that's just my preference. Shake cleaner before use.

Alternately, You can add 1 cap-full Thieves Concentrated Cleaner (buy here) to 16 ounces of distilled water.

Create a wonderful cleaner that can clean almost anything without fear of killing the cat. Or the kid.

Painted Seashells

Painting on natural elements like leaves, and rocks, is blowing up the internet lately. Isn't this type of art so fun? Painting on a natural surface was high on the to-do list, but the trees here in Kentucky need about one more week before they are really changing colors and ready to paint. Also smooth rocks are a little hard to come by without traipsing through the creek! But, we have a TON of shells from our vacation this past summer. The bits and pieces of shells is what I pick up on the beach because I love their shapes. I never feel like a shell is ugly or not worth picking up because it's broken. If you're ready to get some paint out and have fun with a quick project, dig through the seashell basket and give seashell painting a try!

Shell Painting Tips

  • Choose Neutrals or Metallics, With a Pop of Color. I found it really difficult to paint over the natural beauty of a seashell. Then I reminded myself that these pieces of shells had been hidden in a basket since June. I did find it easier to complement the natural colors of the seashells with neutrals and metallics, but didn't want to go without any pop of color, so I chose a minty mermaid green that I thought would be pretty with the other colors.
  • Keep Your Shapes Simple. I started out trying to draw actual pictures on the shells like I've seen on rocks..That did not work very well at all for me. The natural textures and shapes of the shells lend well to simple patterns. Think lines, waves, zig-zags, and dots.
  • Use These Shells in Other Projects. Think about all the ways you could use these painted shells! A shell garland, shell ornaments, painted shell jewelry, in place of a bow on a present, fill up a shadow box with them, and on and on...

Haunted Hearth and Caravan Presents: The Cauldron of Doom

The misty, ethereal fog that comes from bubbling cauldrons is something I have wanted to emulate for Halloween for a while now. The options were limited and either expensive, dangerous, or  single purpose. (i.e. Dry ice or fogger). That is, until I got my diffuser with the essential oil starter kit! Turns out, my diffuser is perfect for this task, highly functional (we use it every day!), and not dangerous at all.
Here is how I constructed my cauldron of DOOM:
  1. Get your diffuser. Well, obviously, I had the diffuser before I had the idea. (Many of you probably found this post because you already have a diffuser! I'm so glad to be able to offer a fun idea to use it in a different way!) But if you are interested in Essential oils and getting a diffuser for yourself, check this page out.
  2. Get your cauldron. We looked a couple of places for a cauldron that would accommodate the height of the diffuser. Wal-Mart is where I ended up finding this one. (I believe it was around $6)
  3. Go to the Dollar Tree. A trip to the dollar tree is now in order! I found a foam wreath form, some spooky cloth (I used 3 to wrap my foam form), a skeleton hand, and some glow sticks for good measure.
  4. Assemble the Goodies. Gather all the pieces together. Wrap your foam wreath form with spooky cloth. Wrap the glow sticks up in the spooky cloth if you like-- Do it any way that looks good to you! Fill your diffuser with water according to the directions and add your essential oils. A good fall combo would be thieves and tangerine, but feel free to use whatever floats your boat. Stack the wreath on top of the cauldron.
  5. Diffuse the Diffuser Even More. You'll see the skeleton hand across the top of where the diffuser sends out its mist. It's there for a couple of reasons. 1) It hides the diffuser a bit. 2) It causes the mist to float outward, instead of straight up in a line. This makes it look creepier, floatier, and, well, more cauldron-ish!
